RO vs UV vs UF- Difference Between Water Purifiers!

Are you confused between all the technical terms while purchasing the water purifier? Worry not, we have a detailed comparison that is- RO vs UV vs UF.

It is important to drink safe and pure water as it makes you healthy and suppresses your appetite. Furthermore, there are many health benefits of pure water.

There are many harmful particles like lead, chemicals, pesticides that are present in both, be it well water or metropolitan water supply. Therefore, it is very important to choose the right water purifiers for your kitchen.

The three most important methods of water purification technologies are Reverse Osmosis Purifier(RO), Ultraviolet Rays Purifier (UV), Ultrafiltration (UF).

These are used widely in India, also, they all have their own advantages and disadvantages.

You can select the ideal water purifier for your family, once you know the difference between the RO vs UV vs UF.

Before you select the water purifier, you have to learn about the basic terminologies. For instance, The term TDS full form, Total Dissolved Solids.

What Is The Full Form Of RO UV & UF

RO Full Form is Reverse Osmosis.

UV Full Form is Ultravoilet.

UF Full Form is Ultrafiltration.

RO Water Purifier

RO purification systems work on the principle of Reverse Osmosis. In the RO system, water moves from a higher concentration to a lower concentration by the semipermeable membrane.

As it is against the principles of nature, you have to apply external pressure to the water to work on the system.

Though, the RO water purifiers have a pump that forces water through the semipermeable membrane. This membrane contains minute pores that allow molecules to have a molecular weight below 20 to pass through thereby trapping the heavier molecules.

Most of the salts and the particles have a molecular weight of approximately more than 20. And you get pure water on the other side of the membrane.

UV Water Purifier

The UV water purifiers are the most cost-effective way of protecting residential drinking water against biological containments nowadays.

UV purification systems are mainly used to protect against waterborne viruses, bacteria, molds, and pathogenic disease-causing microorganisms such as giardia and cryptosporidium.

Even viruses such as the hepatitis virus, that known to be highly resistant to chlorine-treated water, can be relatively easily eradicated by using UV treatment.

UF Water Purifier

UF full form is Ultrafiltration and it is another system of water purification. It works without electricity and kills all the harmful microorganisms from the water.

Not just that, UF water purifiers remove all the bacteria, viruses from the water, unlike UV water purifiers. The UF water purifiers work without electricity.

The reason behind this is that it doesn’t need tap water pressure. Moreover, it works well with regular pipe water pressure.

However, the only disadvantage or lag you can say is that it doesn’t remove the Dissolved Solids in the water. Consequently, allowing you to use it when you are 100% sure about the level of Dissolved solids in the water.

RO vs UV

Ultra Violet Purification! How it differs from RO?

The water absorption by the roots of the plants is the best example of osmosis. Reverse osmosis is the exact opposite of osmosis.

In this reverse osmosis, the liquid moves from an area of higher concentration to that of a lower one, again through a semipermeable membrane.

This is against their natural behavior. The role of the semipermeable membrane is very essential in Reverse Osmosis. This membrane performs a selective role in the sense that it allows some molecules to pass through when restricting the others depending on their size.

RO filters can remove the heavy metal impurities but allow gases like Carbon dioxide (CO2) to pass through.

Whereas, UV purification systems are mainly used to protect against waterborne viruses, bacteria, molds, and pathogenic disease-causing microorganisms such as giardia and cryptosporidium.

UV filters do not waste any water, also do not use chemicals to purify water. It helps in ensuring that the taste of the water remains the same.

RO vs UV vs UF

Ultrafiltration! How is it different from RO and UV?

The ultrafiltration process is free from electricity consumption.

When comparing the pores of the filters between RO and UF, you will see that the UF membranes have a little larger pores than RO filters. They can certainly take care of the germs, bacterias, but, they are not effective in eliminating TDS

The UF that not require much maintenance, thereby saving you a little sum of money. Furthermore, the filters have the capacity to last for a really long time.

UF differs from UV as it does not make the application of ultraviolet radiations to remove dirt and impurities.

Conclusion

It is not like everything in this world is perfect. There are some plus and negative points in any water filter you choose.

For Indian homes, I recommend the combination of RO, UV, and UF along with TDS controllers. If you choose the water purifier with this combination, you will never be worried again about the working of the water purifier.

Now that you know the difference between RO vs UV vs UF water purifier, go and buy some good things.
